Old paper is used in this intaglio etching for chine collé. Aquatint was also applied. Areas of tone in the etching require an aquatint, while most lines do not because they will hold ink on account of their thinness. However, an area will not hold ink unless little reservoirs for the ink are created on the plate. That is the purpose of the aquatint in this printmaking technique.
