Joseph Campbell woocut portrait by printmaker Dirk Hagner
Printmakers typically like to experiment. In this woodcut of the teacher and scholar Joseph Campbell I reversed the normal way of working on a relief print: Instead of cutting the light parts I cut the dark parts of the block. Printing the multiples with light ink on a hand-brushed area of sumi ink allowed for the different look and feel. Campbell was well known in his field of mythology, particularly in that of the American Indians, but he was also an experts on myths from around the globe. He died in 1987.
