The beauty of using wood as the material in printmaking is that it can contribute largely to the piece itself. It is a collaboration between the printmaker artist and the woodblock. This portrait here is of the poet Jacques Prévert who was early on part of the surrealist movement in France. Aside of poetry he penned many lyrics for Edith Piaff and Yves Montand. He also wrote a number of screenplays, such as for the acclaimed movie Les Enfants du Paradis. Prévert died in 1977. On the woodcut a part of one of his poems is visible in the background.
