woodcut portrait of Gwendolyn Brooks by printmaker Dirk Hagner
Poet Gwendolyn Brooks received many awards for her work, such as the Pulitzer Prize (1949), National Institute of Arts and Letters, Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the National Book Foundation. She died in 2000. This black and white woodblock print is executed in the white line style. It shows what expressive values can be achieved in what is the most graphic medium in printmaking.
