Artist Käthe Kollwitz was born in 1867. She was a powerful force in printmaking and the graphic arts until she died in 1945. One of her greatest influences was the artist Ernst Barlach.
This woodblock print is based on a self-portrait for which she used a different medium of printmaking, lithography. This relief print uses different kind of woods, and, like all the other woodcuts, was hand-pulled.
